Manuscript of James J. Hill's address on the opening of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and related letter, circa 1909-1915.

The manuscript of James J. Hill's address on the opening of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition consists of twenty-nine typescript leaves containing the text of a speech delivered by Hill on the first day of the international trade fair in Seattle, Washington. The speech, which urged that conservation of natural resources also should be an important component of the development of the region, was issued subsequently as a publication. Also included is a letter dated March 2, 1915, from attorney, E. F. Blaine, to University of Washington Librarian, William E. Henry, explaining that Hill had presented the manuscript to him immediately after having given the speech with the intention of having it "preserved among the archives" of the University, but that Blaine had neglected to do so until that time.
